I’ve been guilty of saying I wanted to be more adventurous and then finding an excuse to not follow through.
Let’s face it, stepping outside of your comfort zone is scary. Back at the beginning of 2016, I resolved to be fearless and try something new. For 2 1/2 years prior to pulling the trigger, I’d been planning to travel the world with my boyfriend. At first, we committed to doing this together. I guess to us, world travel seemed much less scary knowing we wouldn’t be alone. In my head, I romanticized traveling the world with my partner. Even still with all the plans we made, we continued to stall and make excuses as to why we had yet to follow through.
And then life happened and without going into too much detail, traveling the world with my boyfriend was no longer an option.
It was then that I knew I needed to make a choice. Either continue without him or stay where I was. At the time, I was stuck in a life that made me very unhappy. I decided that I wanted to see what else the world had to offer. In the end, I chose to continue without him and have since lived and worked in 9 countries by myself.
Now selling off all your possessions and hitting the road may not appeal to you. Not not everyone can live life like a nomad. But checking things off your bucket list is something that will give you so much happiness. But just making up your mind to do something isn’t enough, you need to commit to it and follow through. It could be as simple as taking a dance class or something more daring like jumping out of an airplane, whatever it is step outside your comfort zone and get it done.
Starting small is how I began to do things that scared me. I started with something that I’d always wanted to do, and it was getting my motorcycle license. From there, I kept adding things to, and checking things off the list. For me, I knew it was time to stop thinking about it and start doing it. We’ve got such little time here and I didn’t want to live one second with disappointment. I need to know that I tried because there are so many incredible benefits to trying something new.
Whatever it is, you need to do it. You won’t regret a single second of enriching your life this way…
Trying new things can be both scary and empowering at the same time. But isn’t that the point? Exposing myself to new activities and cultures has changed the way I look at my life and the world. And by expanding my consciousness to new ideas, I built up my self confidence. In turn, I learned so much about myself through the process.
